本研究室では、生命現象の理解という基礎的な領域から生活支援技術の開発に至るまで、幅広い分野を扱います。生体システムは、分子-細胞-器官から最終的には個体に至るまで、階層構造を形作って様々な機能を実現しています。ナノテクノロジやマルチモーダル計測を駆使しつつ生体システムの様々な階層の情報を得て、さらにデータを統合する視点で数理的な解析やモデリングを行うことにより、生命現象の本質が理解できると考えています。

Kotani & Shimba Laboratory

We aim to elucidate the operating principles of biological systems for medical engineering applications by acquiring information on these systems on various scales with nanotechnology and multimodal measurements and integrating the data from the various scales into mathematical analyses and models.

Our laboratory belongs to

the Department of Human and Engineered Environmental Studies.

2026.1Mr. Hiroki Ishii (B4) received the Department of Precision Engineering Graduation Thesis Award and the Life Support Society Encouragement Award, and Mr. Nobuyuki Kido (B4) received the SICE Outstanding Student Award.
2025.12We held a joint research presentation, tour, and year-end party with the Takayama Laboratory at Shibaura Institute of Technology.
2025.10We held a welcome party for Mr. Xin, who joined our lab as an international student from University College London.
2025.9As part of the medical school lecture “Public Health Practice”, fifth-year medical students visited our laboratory and exchanged of views on the future relationship between medicine and engineering technology.

2025.6Mr. Runqi from Imperial College London and Ms. Miruna from the California Institute of Technology joined our lab as interns, and we held a welcome party for them in the lab.
